Pathfinders seek volunteers
to preserve town’s beauty

JACKSON — The goals of the group are ambitious: to map, mark and maintain Jackson’s trails, to preserve the environment, to educate others about Jackson’s resources, and to save open land so that all can enjoy it.

The Jackson Pathfinders are enthusiastic about their organization and committed to preservation of land, but there is one thing they are lacking: volunteers.

"The Pathfinders have many different opportunities for people to become involved," said Dawn Rakow, vice chairwoman of the group. "The amount of time and to what extent a person volunteers is entirely up to them. We are in need of members to help with one-time projects or assignments on an as needed basis."

Members of the Pathfinders believe they have already made progress toward their goals. Volunteers have begun to identify, map, mark and maintain trails for walking, hiking, jogging, bicycling and equestrian activities on public and, where permitted, private land. The group organizes several path-clearing "parties" throughout the year, as well as "Adopt a Trail" and "Keep it Nice" programs.

Additionally, the Pathfinders have one-time cleanup projects of an established trail.

It is not necessary to be a member of the Pathfinders to participate in these activities.

The organization is recognized by the Township Committee and works with the recreation committee and the environmental commission.

"The members of this group are from every political party," said Karen Borga, the group’s chairwoman. "Over the years we have partnered with every group of people from hikers to bikers to township officials. We all have the same goal: preserving open space and trails for everyone. Many of the projects we do are ideal for Scouts working on badges or anyone who wants or needs community service time."

Members of the Pathfinders, which has existed for three years, are hoping the work they are doing will be enjoyed for years to come.

"By preserving these open spaces we hope to provide generations of individuals and groups the chance to explore the abundance of Jackson’s natural beauty," Rakow said.

The Jackson Pathfinders meet on the third Thursday of every month at 8 p.m. For location and information contact Dawn Rakow at (732) 833-0373 or visit the Internet site www.jacksonpathfinders.org.
