ROTC cadets to hold
annual gift auction

The cadets of the 782nd Air Force Junior ROTC, who brought home three first-place trophies from the Montclair Competition for Academics Team, Armed Drill and Unarmed Color Guard, are now gearing up for their annual gift auction.

The auction will be sponsored by Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 4703 and held March 8 at 5 p.m. in the memorial cafeteria at Jackson Memorial High School, 102 Don Connor Blvd. All proceeds remain within the program to furnish the cadets with new equipment for competition and allow them an awards ceremony dinner at the end of the year to honor their achievements.

Refreshments will be available. Baby-sitting will be provided for a charge of $4 per child. Advance tickets are $4 until March 7. Tickets at the door or the day of the auction will be $5. For further information, contact Petra Leone, (732) 866-2547, or Liz Sansone, (732) 833-2213.

Conservation contests’

deadline is March 2

The Ocean County Soil Conservation District is now accepting entries for its 2002 conservation contests. The theme for the contests is "Food for the Future: The Garden State." All Ocean County students are eligible to participate. The district sponsors these contests annually to foster an appreciation for natural resources. The theme of this year’s contests has been selected to promote a greater awareness about how people’s actions can improve their environment.

There are three conservation contests – essay, bumper sticker and poster. The essay and bumper sticker contests have three divisions – grades 4-6, 7-9 and 10-12. The poster contest has five divisions – grades kindergarten-1, 2-3, 4-6, 7-9 and 10-12. Bonds are awarded in each division for first, second and third place.

Prizes will be awarded as follows: first place - $100 savings bond; second place - $75 savings bond; third place - $50 savings bond. The grand champion of the bumper sticker contest wins an additional $100 savings bond, and also has his or her entry processed into actual bumper stickers.

The district has assembled an information packet that will help students and teachers prepare for the contests. The deadline for submitting entries is March 2. For an information packet, call (609) 971-7002 Monday through Friday, 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.
