Osteoporosis screenings available at health dept.

Ocean County women are encouraged to register for a free osteoporosis screening and assessment during clinics held at 12:30 p.m. on the first Wednesday of every month at the Ocean County Health Department (OCHD) main building, 175 Sunset Rd., Toms River.

Osteoporosis is a disease in which bones become fragile and more likely to break. If not prevented or if left untreated, osteoporosis can progress painlessly until a bone breaks. The fractures usually occur in the hip, spine and wrist.

"The total screening time, including evaluation, takes about 20 minutes and is painless," according to Ocean County Health Department Public Information Officer, Edward Rumen. "This is a free and valuable public health service and we encourage Ocean County women to make use of it." Appointments are necessary and are taken on a first call basis. To schedule an appointment call (732) 341-9700 ext. 7604.
