New Egypt Flea Market still open and operating on Route 537 We were pleased to read the Tri-Town News’ featured article (Aug. 15) about the Engles and their Book Garden. We are friends of the Engles and fans of their business, and owner-managers of the New Egypt Flea Market, which you mention in your article. Our market was opened in 1959 when Boyer’s Sales Stables in New Egypt closed. Originally called the New Egypt Auction and Farmer’s Market, we now call it the New Egypt Flea Market Village and Auction. It has been in continuous operation by us since 1959 to the present at 933 Route 537. There is no "old" or "new" New Egypt Flea Market. In 1989, our main pavilion burned in what we do not doubt was an arson fire intended to put our market out of business, and for years thereafter persons who knew that our market was open and active spread the falsehood that it was closed and out of business. We are pleased to report that we have an active village of about 80 shops, as well as many outdoor tables, and are confident that it will continue to operate and grow in popularity in the future.
