The Lakewood Township Committee adopted an ordinance at its March 25 meeting that would vacate all right, title and interest in the public portions of Washington Avenue, Charles Avenue, Vine Avenue and Vine Place, where a residential and commercial development will be built next to Greenwood Cemetery. The ordinance will not be carried to the committee’s April 15 meeting as had been reported in the Tri-Town News. Township Attorney Steven Secare said that after researching the issue, he determined that the developer of the project could not be charged to have the township vacate the land. Committee members had asked Secare to examine the issue after resident Gerri Ballwanz addressed members at the meeting where the ordinance was adopted.

A quote by George Watson, former president of the Greenwood Cemetery, Lakewood, stated that the mother and father of Lakewood NAACP President James Waters are buried in the cemetery. Waters said that although his mother and several other family members are buried in the cemetery, his father is still alive.
