Letters Our world here in Mississippi and Louis-iana is forever changed by the devastation that Hurri-cane Katrina left in her wake. Some of us have been displaced, or have family or friends displaced, possibly still living with us. We are still at a point where when we talk about all the misfortunes that people we know have suffered, we still shed many tears. The effects which Hurricane Katrina had on our community are indescribable. Not only did she affect the community as a whole, but each individual, male or female, from 1 month to 100 years old has had mind-boggling problems with which to deal. Through all the anguish we have truly been amazed and humbled by the concern of people throughout the country who have been willing to give of themselves to help us in any way they possibly could. There is no way to adequately thank people for their outpouring of time and donations to aid us in our time of need. The chamber of commerce, fire departments, police department and citizens of the city of Howell, New Jersey, came to our aid early in the recovery process with two trailer loads of needed supplies for our citizens. We sincerely thank you for your thoughts, prayers and generosity. Your help has been invaluable and will never be forgotten. Again, thank ya’ll for your support and generosity and keep us in your prayers as we continue down the road to recovery. Happy New Year to all.
Residents of Tylertown Tylertown, Miss. A pair of ‘angels’ made party very special We think of this time of year as giving, not receiving. That is exactly what these two celestial angels did at the children’s Christmas party for underprivileged children here in Jackson. They could have chosen to be with their friends on a Friday night, but instead they chose to make other children enjoy a Christmas they might never have had. Here at Westlake Mews rental apartments we had a Christmas party for the poor children of Jackson. These two angels, Danielle Ruzzano and Emmylou Soto, gave of their time in serving food and ice cream and making sure these children had the time of their life they would not forget. As the night progressed and in the middle of making sure the children were having a great time, they also helped to clean up the mess that was made. As I watched them give of their hearts to these less fortunate children, I could see by the gleam in their eyes that they were proud of what they had accomplished. If we could learn a lesson from these angels it would be that helping others is better than being selfish and greedy. I would like to send my thanks as well as the thanks from all of the children who were at the Christ-mas party.
Joseph M. Brill Jackson Kafton’s deeds show that he truly cares for Jackson community For those of you who say that calling for Mike Kafton’s resignation isn’t politically motivated, I can only say we all know that it is. Nobody that I can think of has done more for Jackson than Mike Kafton. Just to name a few of the good works — building the Jackson Jungle playground for our children and grandchildren, helping the nutrition center to feed our neediest seniors, instituting safe trick-or-treating for our families, giving our teens a special dance night of their own, and supporting the Susan G. Komen Walk for the Cure, for breast cancer. The Mike Kafton I have known is truly a caring and generous person. Mike’s enemies tried once before to smear his good name and were caught in their own web of deceit. They are now at it once again. He has publicly admitted, and sincerely apologized for, being over the legal drinking limit, just once, by one one-hundredth of a percent. However, his many good works for the Jackson community speak volumes as to the very decent man he is. The people of Jackson will judge his record of caring and tireless commitment to the community we all cherish, for however many years we have lived here. “People who live in glass houses should not throw stones.” Rather, each public person has a responsibility to inform us about his or her positive accomplishments, if any, and their positive and practical vision for our community. How have they worked thus far, and what specific plans do they have to meet the varied and changing needs of our community? That is the proper test for our office holders and candidates, and should be applied to all.
Linda Selznick Jackson Parade was a special event for Jackson high school football team As a member and captain of the Jackson Memorial High School football team, I would like to thank all of the emergency services that took part in our celebration parade on Dec. 4. Their time and effort is greatly appreciated by our team and by our community. The parade was a great experience and could not have been possible without these men and women taking the time out of their own lives on a Sunday night. These men and women made our special night fun and memorable. Thank you. Corey Lavin and the 2005 state champion Jaguars football team Jackson
