Jackson artist honored at Monmouth County show

The individual works of five artists have been selected winners in the Monmouth County Arts Council’s 2006 Juried Art Show and Sale.

The winners are:

• Tim Gaydos, Paterson, for his acrylic painting “Park Morning II.”

• Michael Lee, Neptune, for a photograph, “Ester.”

• Robert Pillsbury, Long Branch, for a mixed-media work, “Broken Horizon.”

• Joyce Stolaroff, Asbury Park, for a monotype, “Green Portrait.”

• Mira Welnowska, Jackson, for a bronze sculpture, “Frightened Nature.”

Each of the five winning artists was presented with a check in the amount of $250 by Freeholder Lillian G. Burry on behalf of the Monmouth County Board of Freeholders.

The show opened to the public Feb. 5 and runs to March 12, at the Monmouth Museum on the campus of Brookdale Community College, Route 520, Lincroft. Exhibition hours are Tuesday to Satur-day, 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., and Sunday, 1-5 p.m., with a $5 gallery admission.

“It was my heartfelt pleasure to participate in this year’s art show on behalf of the entire Board of Freeholders,” Burry said.

“Art serves not only to enhance the lives of the individual artists, it provides all of us with a valuable perspective on our lives and the world around us. We must do our part to support the arts in Monmouth County and elsewhere,” she added.

The art show, the arts council’s 27th, was judged by Napoleon Jones-Hender-son, whose work uses a full range of materials from fabric and tiles to oils and enamels. Some of his work is part of the permanent collections of the Art Institute of Chicago, among others, and has been shown nationally in several museums, including the Boston Institute of Con-temporary Art, the Indianapolis Museum of Art, the Museum of Memphis and others, according to a press release from the Monmouth County office of public information.

Of the 403 works of art that were entered in the show, 83 are exhibited at the Monmouth Museum, said Terri Thomas, community arts director for the arts council. In addition to the winners, eight artists received honorable mention. All 83 works are on display until March 12.

The Juried Art Show and Sale is made possible through funding from the Mon-mouth County Board of Freeholders, through the county Historical Commis-sion and the New Jersey State Council on the Arts within the Department of State, a partner agency of the National Endow-ment of the Arts. Most pieces are for sale, and a portion of the proceeds benefits the Monmouth Arts Council and the Mon-mouth Museum.

The arts council’s show and sale is an annual event, and is open to all artists and all mediums. More information, and applications, can be found at the Internet Web site www.monmouthartscouncil.org.
