Jackson indoor teams are the county’s best
JERSEY CITY — Both the Jackson High School girls and boys indoor track teams dominated en route to winning Ocean County Championships last Saturday at the Armory in Jersey City.
The girls easily outdistanced the competition, compiling a total of 95 points. Toms River North was the Lady Jaguars’ nearest competition, finishing second with 48 points. Southern was third (42.5) and Lakewood finished fourth (28).
For the boys, Jackson edged Central to lay claim to the county title. The Jags finished with a total of 53 points, while Central posted 42. Lakewood placed fifth with 34 points.
The girls were lead by Kelly Fortune, who won two events and placed runner-up in another. Fortune won the 55-meter hurdles with a time of 8.4 seconds. She returned later in the day to capture the high jump with a leap of 5 feet, 2 inches.
In addition, Fortune finished second behind Lakewood’s Shavon Greaves in the 55-meter dash. Greaves won the event with a blistering time of 6.8. Fortune wasn’t far behind, finishing the race in a time of 7.2.
“She is having a great season,” Jackson coach Alton Johnson said. “She put forth a strong performance for us during this meet. I think that she can get even better. We’re having a good indoor season, but we’re trying to gear ourselves up for the spring.”
Jackson also dominated in the distance events. Amanda Marino won the 1,600 with a time of 5:10.4, while teammate Jenn Clausen took the 3,200 in a time of 11:12.4.
“We know what to expect when those two runners get on the track,” Johnson said. “All year long they have been coming up solid for us. The times have been good and they are both right where they should be for this point in the year. The main focus now is to stay healthy.”
As usual, Jackson’s depth was the key to victory. The Lady Jags went 2-3-4 in the 55 dash. Kim Menafra was third (7.3) behind Fortune, and Jordan Bunch finished fourth with a time of (7.3)
That wasn’t the only event Jackson placed more than one athlete. Mara Sirbu was fifth in the 55 hurdles (8.6), while Menafra was sixth (9.1).
In the 400 meters, Nicole Castronuova was runner-up with a time of 59.3. Menafra was fourth (59.7) and Bunch placed sixth (1:01.1)
Ashley Avilleira finished second behind Clausen in the 3,200 with a time of 11:56.0 and Vallerie Sidhoum was fourth in 12:06.
“When you place that many athletes in events, you’re going to score a lot of points,” Johnson said. “That has been our strong point all season. We’re always going to get our winners, but it’s placing those other runners in the top six that gives us the insurance points needed to secure championships.”
For the boys, junior Kris Carle captured both the 1,600 and 3,200 events to lead the Jags. Carle finished with a time of 4:29.7 taking the 1,600. He ran a time of 9:49.1 to capture the 3,200.
The NJSIAA Meet of Champions scheduled for last Sunday at Princeton University was postponed because of bad weather.
