Students' art on display

During the month of March, art educators all over the United States celebrate the country's talented students in a venue called Youth Art Month.

Student artists from Monsignor Donovan High School, Toms River, are participating in Ocean County's seventh Youth Art Month exhibit sponsored by the Art Educators of New Jersey.

The main purpose of Youth Art Month is to emphasize the value of art and art education for all students and to encourage public support and awareness of quality school art programs. The theme for this year's Youth Art Month is a quote by contemporary artist Jackson Pollock, "No Limits Just Edges."

Student artists began by participating in a contest to design a flag that will be flown in Washington, D.C., billboards, and posters. Designs submitted by Samantha Damiano, a sophomore from Brick, and Shelby Hadfield, a freshman from Jackson, were selected to represent Monsignor Donovan in a competition with students from around the state. Hadfield received honorable mention for her poster design and it has been on display on the Art Educators of New Jersey Web gallery at www.artsonia.com/aenj1.

The 2006 Youth Art Month exhibit opened on March 1 and will run through March 30 at the Jackson library. An opening reception March 8 honored the student artists. Representing Monsig-nor Donovan are Travis Thompson-Sevick and Katelyn Congilose, both sophomores, and Elizabeth Reyes, a senior, all from Toms River, Alex Letizia and Kushboo Patel, seniors, and Kristen Constantine, Meighan Avalos and Michael Reca, juniors, all from Brick, Steve Goldblatt, a senior from Jackson, Katie Salvatore, a sophomore from Lakewood, and Eric Penman, a freshman, and Colleen Napolitano, a junior, both from Island Heights.

Two of the artists had their artwork selected to be displayed in the state Youth Art Month exhibit that will be held at the State House during March.

Goldblatt created a still-life drawing that is rendered in pen to show value and texture. Reyes' artwork is an acrylic painting of a still-life set up demonstrating how an artist uses color to show light and form. Both students were honored at a reception at the State House March 15.

Student artists are also participating in the Ocean County Teen Arts Festival currently being held at the Fine Arts Gallery of Ocean County College, Toms River, through March 22.

The following Monsignor Donovan students have work on display: Stephanie Lach, of Lakewood; Paul Stewart, of Jackson; Vanessa Rodak, of Howell; Chris Hrycenko, Amanda Kupiec, Elizabeth Reyes, Kate Male-chefski, Catrin Dunn and Jason Burris, all of Toms River; Victoria Marziale, Bill Moran, Andrew Florek, Alex Letizia, and Kelly McGovern, all of Brick; Bill Loundy, of Seaside Heights; Russ Roe, of Seaside Park Jordan Garofolo, Eric Penman and Colleen Napolitano, all of Island Heights; Kaitlin Ensor, of Lanoka Harbor; and Kelly Payne and Colleen Fix.
