Letters Howell resident is not sold on idea for six-story hotel
In the advent of a proposed six-story hotel, conference center and yet more stores being built on the northern corner of Route 9, Northwoods Place and Interstate 195, many residents of Howell are greatly opposed to this building.
The current administration is acting not only financially irresponsible in this decision, but environmentally irresponsible as well. The current administration pats themselves on the back saying "$650,000 in tax revenue will be generated by this building" when this number is greatly overstated. Overstating of tax revenue seems to be the practice. Howell has for years been opening its doors to ratables with no relief for taxpayers in sight.
Another nail in taxpayers' coffins is we will be footing the bill for the new fire equipment required to service a six-story high rise in the event of a fire disaster. How can the current administration possibly stick it to Freewood Acres, Winston Park, Land O' Pines and other developments more than they already are doing? Financial irresponsibility has repercussions or have you ignored Finance 101?
Yet another repercussion of the building would be the devaluation of the personal real estate adjacent and in the surrounding areas of the megaplex. Again, as long as you get our tax payments, you really could care less.
If one refers to maps available from the New Jersey Depart-ment of Environmental Protec-tion, you will see this parcel of land is clearly defined as wetlands and is also deemed environmentally sensitive according the same agency. I as well as others in town believe there are back-door dealings going on to have such a proposal rammed down the town's throat using the "hurry up and get it done" method.
In addition to the infringement of wetlands, there would be increased pollution in the area: light pollution from the complex, air quality would be compromised from the increase in traffic, noise pollution with the removal of the natural noise barriers, as well as the most important, runoff which would compromise the ground water quality. At least 50 percent of the adjacent development uses well water.
Joe DiBella, you should listen to what the town folk are saying. I imagine this is a very valid reason why you are being recalled. The current administration should stop, look and listen to all parties involved and do something that will more than benefit yourselves; perhaps the residents for a change.
