Ceremony set at Vietnam memorial
The New Jersey Vietnam Veterans Memorial Foundation will hold its Memorial Day ceremony May 29 at 11 a.m. in Holmdel at the site of the New Jersey Vietnam Veterans Memorial. Marine Sgt. Stephen K. Ritter of Farmingdale will be the guest speaker. Ritter joined the Marine Corps after graduating from high school 24 years ago and served for four years as an aerial gunner instructor. He returned home and took a job with the U.S. Postal Service. In 2003, he decided to re-enlist in the Marines after military action began in the Middle East, and served two tours in Iraq with Marine Light Attack Helicop-ter Squadron 775. Ritter speaks regularly about his experiences, and he and his wife, Dawn, send care packages to the troops still overseas. He also helps raise funds for the David Greene Memorial Fund, a scholarship fund created for the two children of Lt. Col. David S. Greene, a helicopter pilot in Ritter's unit who was killed in Iraq in 2004. The New Jersey Vietnam Veterans Memorial Foundation will award two $2,500 college scholarships during the ceremony. The New Jersey Vietnam Veterans Memorial is off the Garden State Park-way at exit 116. For details, log on to www.njvvmf.org or call (732) 335-0033.
