The Ocean County Sheriff's Department has scheduled a free child seat safety inspection 2-6 p.m. Oct. 11 at the Goddard School on Route 70, Toms River. According to Sheriff William L. Polhemus, eight out of 10 child safety seats are installed incorrectly. A certified safety technician will perform a comprehensive inspection that includes checking restraint crash worthiness, age and size appropriateness, and manufacturer and National Highway Transportation Safety Administration recalls. Technicians also will discuss installation misuses and proper location of the safety seat in the vehicle. "Approximately 2,000 children die each year in motor vehicle crashes," said Polhemus. "Sadly, the overwhelming majority are either not or improperly restrained in a child seat."
