Rabies vaccination to be offered

JACKSON - Whether it is raining cats and dogs or the sun is shining on the morning of Oct. 14, a free rabies vaccination clinic will be held.

The free clinic, to be held at the public works garage, Don Connor Boulevard, between 11 a.m. and 1 p.m., will offer rabies immunizations for cats and dogs that are owned by any state resident.

"The vaccine is supplied by the state and distributed by the county," said Joe Sbano, animal control officer and cruelty investigator. "Anyone in New Jersey can go to any clinic throughout the state."

Sbano said the importance of the vaccination clinic is to make certain every animal in Ocean County is vaccinated against rabies, a disease for which there is no cure.

"This is all free of charge," he said. "Residents of Jackson can also get a license for their pet. All dogs must be licensed each year in January."

Pet owners must bring proof of previous rabies vaccinations to the clinic in order for their pet to receive a three-year immunization. If no proof is available, a one-year vaccination will be given.

Additionally, if Jackson pet owners are applying for a license, they must bring proof of neutering in order to receive a reduced license fee. Licenses will only be available for the remainder of 2006. A new license will be required in January.
