Obituaries
Bradley H. Gray Mr. Gray, 75, of Old Bridge, died Oct. 8 at Cranbury Center, Monroe Township. Born in Jersey City, he resided in Old Bridge most of his life. He was a banker at Chase Manhattan Bank, New York City, for 35 years, retiring in 1982. Mr. Gray was a member of Nativity Evangelical Lutheran Church, East Brunswick. He was a member of the Old Bridge Civic Association, a founding member and secretary/treasurer of the Atlantic Coast Old Timers Auto Racing Club, and a member of the Garden State Vintage Stock Car Club. He was predeceased by his wife, Barbara Lehan Gray, in 1998. Mr. Gray is survived by two daughters and a son-in-law, Donna and Lenin Simicich of Freehold, and Linda Curry of North Brunswick; two sons and daughters-in-law, Brian and Amy Gray of Old Bridge, and Thomas and Kathleen Gray of Jackson; his mother-in-law, Amelia Lehan; and 12 grandchildren. A funeral service was held at the Brunswick Memorial Home, East Brunswick, followed by interment at Chestnut Hill Cemetery, East Brunswick.
Marvin L. Shapiro Mr. Shapiro, 62, of West Palm Beach, Fla., died Oct. 1 at Jersey Shore University Medical Center Neptune. He resided in Jackson, prior to moving to Florida. He was employed in the automotive industry his entire life. He enjoyed golf. Mr. Shapiro is survived by his wife of 39 years, Jeanne Shapiro; two sons and daughters-in-law, Martin and Debbie Shapiro of Freehold, and Louis and Nora Shapiro of Rumson; a daughter and son-in-law, Ellen and Frank Gonzalez of Tinton Falls; a sister, Myra Shapiro of Florida; and four grandchildren. Interment was at Holmdel Cemetery. Arrangements were by Thompson Memorial Home, Red Bank. Memorial donations may be made to the American Diabetes Association, 19 Schoolhouse Road, Somerset 08873. Frances M. Bastedo Mrs. Bastedo, 93, of Freehold, died Oct. 10 at Care One at Jackson. Born in Saskatchewan, Canada, she resided in Freehold and Southern Pines, N.C., before moving back to Freehold. She was a seamstress in the Freehold area and had worked as a chef in Southern Pines, N.C. She was a former member of The Reformed Church of Freehold. Mrs. Bastedo was predeceased by her son, Donald, in 1996; three brothers, John, Robert and George "Scottie" Gillespie; and two sisters, Margaret MacClellan and Lyla Kilgour. She is survived by her husband, Harry, of Jackson; a brother and sister-in-law, Douglas and Virginia Gillespie of Howell; a brother-in-law, William Bastedo of Jackson; a sister-in-law, Ruth B. Ohlberg of Jackson; a granddaughter; and many nieces and nephews. The funeral service was held at the Freeman Funeral Home, Freehold, followed by interment at Maplewood Cemetery, Freehold Township.
JoAnne Tempora Ms. Tempora, 43, of the Morganville section of Marlboro, died Oct. 3 at CentraState Medical Center, Freehold Township. Born in Queens, N.Y., she had lived in Jackson and Howell before moving to Morganville 11 years ago. She was a teacher's assistant at CPC Behavioral Healthcare's High Point School, Morganville, for the past six years. Ms. Tempora was also a girls basketball and softball coach at St. Benedict School, Holmdel, for which she led the Rebel Magic to numerous championships and undefeated seasons. An avid softball player, she played in various leagues throughout Monmouth and Ocean counties and in many all-star games as well. Surviving are her partner of 11 years, Gabrielle Salemi; two children, Michael and Kristyn, both at home; a sister and brother-in-law, Patricia and George Sargent of Morganville; an aunt and uncle, Dolores and Guy Miller of Atlantic Beach, N.Y.; two nieces and a nephew. A funeral liturgy was offered at St. Benedict Roman Catholic Church, Holmdel. Interment was private. Freeman Manalapan-Marlboro Funeral Home, Manalapan, was in charge of arrangements. McCawley Mr. McCawley, 79, of Howell, died Oct. 4 at Monmouth Medical Center, Long Branch, from injuries resulting from an automobile accident on July 30. Born in Scranton, Pa., he and his family had lived in Lake Parsippany, as well as Reston, La., and Milford, Conn., while he was employed as a plant manager for several manufacturing firms. He attended the University of Scranton and graduated from the University of Connecticut, Storrs, with a degree in history. He later earned a master's degree from Thomas Edison State College, Trenton. He moved to Manalapan in 1969 before relocating to Howell in 1989. Mr. McCawley also worked as a consultant for the George S. May Co., traveling extensively throughout the U.S. and spending a year in Saudi Arabia. At the time of his retirement in 1997, he was a revenue officer with the Internal Revenue Service (IRS). Mr. McCawley served in the U.S. Army and was honorably discharged in 1947. He was a communicant of St. Robert Bellarmine Roman Catholic Church, Freehold Township. He was a past chief of the Lake Parsippany Volunteer Fire Company and served his community as a council member, team coach and volunteer firefighter. In addition, he was an active member of the Surrey Downs Men's Club and its poker group. He was predeceased in 2000 by his former wife, Shirley K. McCawley, and in 2003 by a daughter, Patricia McCawley Curialle. Surviving are five sons and daughters-in-law, Michael and Noel McCawley of Largo, Fla., Timothy and Valerie McCawley of Middletown, John McCawley and Thomas McCawley, both of Matawan, and Matthew and Suzanne McCawley of Jackson; two daughters and a son-in-law, Kathleen and Jack Lockwood of Millstone, and Susan Henderson of Manalapan; four brothers, Francis X. McCawley of Maryland, and the Rev. William McCawley, James McCawley and Joseph McCawley, all of Pennsylvania; 10 grandchildren, who knew him as "Pop-Pop"; and six step-grandchildren. A funeral liturgy was offered at St. Joseph's Roman Catholic Church, Perrineville section of Millstone, followed by interment at St. Gabriel's Cemetery, Marlboro. Freeman Manalapan-Marlboro Funeral Home, Manalapan, was in charge of arrangements.
Essie Mae Maples Mrs. Maples, 86, of Freehold, died Sept. 30 at CentraState Medical Center, Freehold Township. A lifelong resident of Monmouth County, she had resided in the Pergolaville section of Manalapan before moving to Freehold. Mrs. Maples was employed in many different fields, retiring in 1991 from the housekeeping department of the John L. Montgomery Care Center, Freehold Township. She is survived by two daughters, Ethel L. Maples of Freehold and Margaret A. Marlow of Lakewood; seven sons, Joseph Maples of Detroit, Harry Maples of New Brunswick, Robert Maples of Farmingdale, Nathaniel Maples of Eatontown, Frank Maples of Piscataway, Edward Maples of Freehold, and Gregory Maples of Brooklyn, N.Y. Funeral services were held at Higgins Memorial Home, Freehold, with Bishop Dr. Charles Simmons officiating. Interment followed at Maplewood Cemetery, Freehold Township.
Celia Hunko Mrs. Hunko, 95, of Freehold Township, died Oct. 4 at home. She was born in New York City. She had lived in Englishtown, Freehold Township, and The Villages in Howell before moving back to Freehold Township last year. Mrs. Hunko managed and helped to establish Knob Hill Golf Course, Manalapan, from its inception in 1963 until her retirement in 1989. She continued her catering business until the age of 89. She was predeceased by her husband, Roger Hunko, in 1996; a son, Robert Hunko, in 1946; and her siblings, Pat Cianci, John Cianci, Fannie Frediani, Tessie Guida, Ida Corleto, Olga Montevago and Eleanor Pearlman. She is survived by her children, Barbara A. Wagner of Freehold, Roger and Kathleen Hunko of Bremerton, Wash., and Suzanne Hope of Freehold Township; a former son-in-law, D. Bruce Wagner, and his wife, Maureen; five grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandson. The funeral liturgy was celebrated at St. Rose of Lima Roman Catholic Church, Freehold, followed by interment at St. Rose of Lima Cemetery, Freehold Township. Higgins Memorial Home, Freehold, was in charge of arrangements. Memorial donations may be made to the American Heart Association, 2550 Route 1, North Brunswick 08902.
