| JACKSON - The next session of the Jackson Parent-to-Parent support group is scheduled for Dec. 7. The topic for the evening is "Collaborating in the IEP Process," presented by Pattie Carollo, Jackson Special Education Advisory Council member, and Andrea Pier, who earned her master's degree in social work and is a school social worker.
According to a press release from the Parent-to-Parent support group, effective collaboration is based on the ongoing participation of two or more individuals who are committed to working together to achieve common goals. These contributors bring different skills and unique contributions to create, strengthen and maintain those relationships. Participants will learn the many benefits of collaboration, how to prepare for an IEP meeting and what to know before attending.
Carollo and Pier attended a training session that was co-sponsored by the New Jersey Department of Education Office of Special Education Programs, Learning Resource Center Project and SPAN (Statewide Parent Advocacy Network) to prepare for this workshop.
All are welcome to attend.
Jackson Parent-to-Parent sessions are held in the Crawford-Rodriguez Elementary School IMC (library) at 1025 Larsen Road from 7-9 p.m. During the last 30 minutes, parents and caregivers have the opportunity to share and receive support related to specific challenges their families face.
The Jackson Parent-to-Parent support group is dedicated to serving the special education needs in Jackson. The mission is to provide a forum where parents and those providing care can find emotional support on the challenges of raising a child with special needs and a venue for information on matters related to special education.
This is accomplished through encouraging, facilitating and educating parents and caregivers in addressing and resolving issues related to special education and empowering them to be effective advocates on behalf of their children and others with special needs.
The Parent-to-Parent support group promotes collaboration with the Jackson School District as effective partners in improving educational outcomes for all students. The group also provides resources and educational workshops.
Child care services are available. Call Pattie Carollo at (732) 886-9584; child care arrangements are limited.
