Puppies rescued from Georgia gas chamber

The Associated Humane Societies in Forked River has rescued nine hound-lab mix puppies and three adult dogs which were about to be euthanized in gas chambers in Georgia.

The puppies, who are between 10 and 12 weeks old, and the other dogs are expected to be up for adoption shortly.

John Bergmann, general manager and zoo director at the Associated Humane Societies, said most pounds and shelters in Georgia only keep dogs alive for three days and still use the gas chamber to euthanize the animals.

"There are groups down south who know where these shelters are and regularly visit the shelters. They evaluate the dogs that are there and rescue the ones they feel are adoptable. At that point they get in touch with us and we take as many as we can," Bergmann said.

In this particular case, Bergmann said he saw pictures of the puppies and offered to take all of them.

"I had the room for three adult dogs which I took, but when I saw the nine puppies, I had to make the room," he said.

To inquire about adopting one of the dogs, call (609) 693-1900.
