Library slates activities

Howell
HOWELL - The Friends of Howell Library have planned a weeklong celebration of special programs and activities to highlight the library during February. The February Friends Festival kicks off the week with the following schedule:

+ Feb. 18, 3 p.m. - the Howell High School a cappella student choral group Rebel Yell will perform. The group will be performing a variety of selections from the Renaissance period through today's pop music. The concert will be presented with refreshments by the Howell Cultural Arts Committee.

+ Feb. 20, 3-5 p.m. - Project Runway comes to the library. The event, modeled after the hit television show, will feature youths competing to fulfill a design challenge. Anyone who has an eye for fashion and can work with limited and unique supplies is welcome to participate. Prizes will be awarded to the winners. Registration is required for this program, open to youths in grades six through 12. The snow date will be Feb. 27.

+ Feb. 21, at 5 p.m. - Dawnie and the Peanut Butter Jammin' Music Co. will perform her solo "Rock n Roll with Dawnie" show as she hops and twists through interactive dances with her original rock. Dawnie gets children of all ages singing and dancing through her exciting and original children's act. Registration is required and is open to children through fifth grade.

+ Feb. 22, 7 p.m. - author and New York Times columnist Kevin Coyne of Freehold will visit the library for a book discussion and signing.

Coyne, who works as an adjunct professor at Columbia University's Grad-uate School of Journalism in New York and is a columnist for The New York Times Sunday New Jersey section, is the author of three books, "A Day in the Life of America," "Domers: A Year at Notre Dame" and "Marching Home: To War and Back with the Men of One American Town." He is also a contributing editor for New Jersey Monthly magazine and is currently working on his fourth book.

+ Feb. 23 at 2 p.m. - Beginning Birthday Card Making with Lois Folla. Create birthday cards with simple stamping techniques.

+ Feb. 24, 10 a.m. to noon - Friends Chess Club chess tournament. The Friends of Howell Library Chess Club has been meeting every Saturday for almost a year and young and old, novice and expert are welcome to relax, have fun and learn a few new chess moves.

+ Feb. 24, 1 p.m. - The Festive Flutes will present "A Musical Menagerie" featuring a whimsical program of animal tunes. The program will feature selections from light classical, folk and popular music.
