Law adds fine for minibike use

HOWELL - The Township Council will update Howell's minibike ordinance to provide penalties for anyone who violates the law.

The council introduced the ordinance on Jan. 16 and will consider it for final passage and adoption at its meeting on Feb. 20.

According to Township Manager Thomas Czerniecki, representatives of the police department asked the council to amend the current law on minibikes.

"From time to time the police request improvements to ordinances so they can better enforce existing laws and make them more effective," Czerniecki said.

The existing law primarily states where it is unlawful for individuals to operate unlicensed motor-driven vehicles. The ordinance prohibits the use of such vehicles on private property, any public street, public grounds without permission, and in manners which are careless, reckless or create loud noises.

The amendment would supplement the existing law by adding penalties for those who violate the ordinance. These penalties include a fine not to exceed $1,000; community service of not more than 30 days; imprisonment not to exceed 30 days; and summonses issued by the police to minors who violate this provision.
