Midshipman David J. Brienza, son of Robert and Violet Brienza of Howell, recently returned to the United States Merchant Marine Academy, where he is a student, after spending four months at sea training aboard a United States merchant vessel.
Brienza sailed on the United States merchant ship APL China as part of the academy's required work-study program, which provides future mariners with shipboard experience. He sailed from California to ports in Japan, South Korea, China and Taiwan.
A graduate of the Marine Academy of Science and Technology High School at Sandy Hook, Brienza was nominated to attend the academy by Congressman Christopher H. Smith and Sen. Frank R. Lautenberg.
All students at the United States Merchant Marine Academy spend part of their sophomore and junior years at sea gaining practical knowledge about the performance and operating characters of various types of merchant vessels. They become familiar with the ocean trade routes of the world.
Located in Kings Point, N.Y., the academy is operated by the Maritime Administration of the United States Department of Transportation.
