College to host WalkAmerica

More than half a million babies are born too soon every year. Many die. More than 120,000 babies are born with serious birth defects that can mean a lifetime disability. That's why the March of Dimes is leading the national fight to save babies from premature birth - the leading killer of newborns - and from other serious threats to infant health.

WalkAmerica is the organization's largest fundraiser. The Ocean County WalkAmerica will take place on April 29 at Ocean County College, Toms River.

"Premature birth has reached epidemic proportions in the United States," said Mark Tasy, 2007 WalkAmerica chair and senior vice president of OceanFirst Bank. "By being part of WalkAmerica on April 29, you can help us to raise money to find the causes and cures for premature birth and other health threats to our babies. Last year Ocean County raised an impressive $236,000 to help find the causes of premature birth. Our goal this year is to reach $310,000."

According to a press release, with the community's support in WalkAmerica, the March of Dimes conducts research into the causes and the prevention of premature birth and birth defects. It also brings information and emotional support to families who have had a premature or sick baby who is being treated in a neonatal intensive care unit.

At WalkAmerica in Ocean County there will be refreshments, entertainment for the entire family and music by G-Rock 106.3 & 106.5. For more information about WalkAmerica or to join the event at Ocean County College, visit walkamerica.org or call 1-800-525-WALK.
