Lakewood girl named youth chair for Arthritis Walk

The Arthritis Foundation, New Jersey Chapter, has named Caro-line Singer, 9, of Lakewood, youth chair of the 2007 Arthritis Walk to be held in Jenkinson's Pavilion, Point Pleasant, April 29.

As chair, Caroline gets the opportunity to speak out about her condition and serve as a leader along with many other volunteers who are eager make a difference in the lives of arthritis victims.

According to a press release, the Arthritis Walk is the Arthritis Foundation's annual signature event that takes place in communities nationwide to raise funds and awareness to fight arthritis, the nation's leading cause of disability. This spring Arthritis Walk events will kick off in more than 400 communities across the United States.

When asked how her friends and peers have reacted to learning about her junior rheumatoid arthritis, Caroline said, "It scared them a little. Sometimes they are shocked to hear that I have the disease."

Caroline has realized that although it may be difficult for children her age to understand that youngsters can get arthritis, her life can be an example to show that it is possible to lead a normal, healthy lifestyle. In addition to singing in the school choir, Caroline participates in dance, gymnastics, cheerleading and soccer.

While many would see her arthritis as an obstacle, Caroline views it as the source of her determination.

"I think my arthritis makes me work harder, it gives me a goal to play that sport and to play better," she said.

Diagnosed when she was just 15 months old, Caroline has endured the many ups and downs of her arthritis, yet has always managed to put on a brave face with the support of her mother and her doctors.

Caroline said that "after a while, you don't feel the shots from getting them so many times."

"By being this year's youth chair, I want to be a role model for all the other children who have this disease," she said. "I want to show them that they don't have to be scared and I want to set a good example."

Teams from schools, houses of worship, businesses, civic groups and neighborhoods come together to show support for those who battle this disease. Teams are forming now for the Arthritis Walk on April 29.
