Jazz lovers can get in the groove 8 p.m. May 16 when The Midiri Brothers perform "Remembering Artie" as part of the MidWeek Jazz Series at the Ocean County College (OCC) Fine Arts Center, Main Campus, College Drive, Toms River. Brothers Joe Midiri (clarinetist) and Paul Midiri (vibes), along with Dan Tobias (trumpet), Pat Mercuri (guitar), Gary Cattley (bass), Joe Holt (piano and harpsichord), and Jim Lawlor (drums) will play hot jazz and swing music for one extended 90-minute set, paying tribute to the famous clarinetist and band leader Artie Shaw. The Midiris create their own arrangements based on transcriptions of classic recordings. They will perform new material just released on CD, based largely upon the famous Gramercy Five groups that Shaw fielded. Tickets are $13 in advance, $15 at the door. Actors from near and far are invited to audition for the Strand Theater Ensemble's July production of "Noises Off." Auditions will be held May 14 and 15 at 7 p.m. at the Strand Theater, 400 Clifton Ave., Lakewood. Five men and four women are being sought to perform. Nova Scotia-born jazz vibraphonist Warren Chiasson will perform in concert with the Warren Chiasson Quartet 2 p.m. May 20 at the Monmouth County Library Headquarters, 125 Symmes Drive, Manalapan. Originally a member of the George Shearing Quintet, Chiasson is known throughout the world for his distinctive four-mallet technique that he weaves into a percussive, melodic style. Inspired by the rich culture of folk music in Cape Breton, Nova Scotia, Chiasson was best known for his creative contributions to the Chet Baker Quartet, the Tal Farlow Trio, and Roberta Flack prior to forming his own group. In addition to recording his own albums, he has played on more than 100 recordings with various artists including a Grammy Award winning album with B.B. King. Phoenix Productions will conduct auditions for "Fiddler on the Roof" May 15 and 16, 7-10 p.m., at the second-floor studio in the Count Basie Theatre, 99 Monmouth St., Red Bank. The Young Artist Program of New Jersey Opera will perform its season-ending "Scenes Concerts" 7:30 p.m. May 16 at the Princeton library, 65 Witherspoon St., Princeton and 2 p.m. May 20 at the Jane Voorhees Zimmerli Art Museum, 71 Hamilton St., New Brunswick. Broadway favorites will take a bow as audiences are taken "Down Memory Lane" in Ocean County College's prerenovation salute to the Fine Arts Center. Director Gary Shaffer will bring together a talented cast to present some favorite Broadway musical hits that have been performed at the OCC Fine Arts Center over the past four decades from "Guys and Dolls" to "Anything Goes," from "Cabaret" to "Hello Muddah, Hello Faddah" (and everything in between). "Curtains Calls," a script-in-hand new look at old musicals, will close the Fine Arts Center's 2006-2007 season with concert versions of musicals of the past accompanied by a live orchestra.
