New Egypt boys play well down the stretch

PLUMSTED - The New Egypt High School boys lacrosse team scored six consecutive goals that bridged the third and fourth quarters last Monday to post a resounding 8-5 come-from-behind win over Northern Burlington.

Trailing 5-2 in the third quarter, the Warriors dominated most of the third and all of the fourth quarter to rally for one of its most impressive victories of the season. The New Egypt offense shredded the Northern Burlington defense for six unanswered goals en route to winning its sixth game of the year.

"We played outstanding lacrosse in both the third and fourth quarters," New Egypt coach Jay Corby said. "For a while it looked as if we may lose the game. But the kids didn't quit. They moved the ball on offense like no other time this season. We have been working on ball movement all season. We just don't move with or without the ball well enough. But this game was different. We were very sharp."

Down by three goals, New Egypt's eruption started with Tommy Carr scoring an unassisted goal to bring the Warriors back to within one, 5-4. Tim Dickert then took an assist from R.J. Healy to knot the game at 5-5 at the start of the fourth quarter.

"At that point in the game, that goal gave us new life," Corby said. "We were fired up at that point. We gained some momentum and went with it. We looked like a new team once we tied the score."

Carr notched the go-ahead goal, while Healy, Morton and Shane Scherholz on an assist from Lance Sutton, scored for the final margin of victory.

"It was nice to see us rally from behind," Corby said. "Offensively, this was our best performance. We were patient and moved the ball well. We had good movement from our players, and that is the key. When you are standing around, nothing is going to happen for you. I'm glad to see they are finally realizing that."

Carr, Scherholz and Healy have shouldered most of the scoring for the Warriors. The three have netted close to 75 goals.

"They have been our go-to type guys," Corby said. "We run a lot of stuff for those guys offensively and count on them to score some goals. They have done a nice job. Hopefully, we can carry this past performance into our final three games of the season."

New Egypt still has contests left against Ewing, Moorestown Friends and Robbinsville. The Robbinsville game is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. May 21.

"I believe these to be three winnable games for us," Corby said. "If we play the way we did late in the game against Northern Burlington, there is no reason why we can't grab a sweep. It would be a gratifying way to end the season. I think the players realize we have an opportunity to end the year on a real positive note."
