Old gives way to new at Plumsted corner

PLUMSTED - Demolition of the former Marshall's Corner Restaurant and other abandoned structures at the intersection of Route 539 and Route 528 have occurred in preparation for a new commercial business tax ratable for the township, according to Mayor Ron Dancer.

The Wawa Corporation will be constructing its third convenience store in Plumsted at this location, as well as the township's first gasoline service area to operate seven days a week, 24 hours a day.

Dancer said that a nearby gas station owner on Route 539 had objected and filed lawsuits all the way to the state Supreme Court that delayed construction for more than four years.

He said the Wawa Corporation has agreed to consult with municipal representatives in the selection and attraction of another new business for the existing Wawa store on the opposite corner of the intersection.

In other business, Dancer said the state Division of Taxation has notified Plumsted that all non-senior citizen homeowners should receive their applications in the mail for the new property tax credit/check program on or about July 6. Upon receipt of the application, homeowners may file for their checks by phone or over the Internet.

Senior citizen homeowners should have already received their applications and can expect their check in early August. Non-senior citizen homeowners can expect their checks in early October, according to Dancer, who is also a member of the state Assembly. Eligible homeowners with incomes less than $250,000 will receive checks up to $2,000 depending upon income and property tax amounts. Anyone not receiving their application or needing assistance may contact the Plumsted tax collection office at (609) 758-2241, ext. 120.

A fireworks display, concert and arts festival will be held on July 7 at New Egypt High School, Evergreen Road. Festivities - including food, refreshments, pony rides, amusements and much more - will begin at 3 p.m. The fireworks display will begin promptly at dusk.

The next meeting of the Township Committee is July 18 at 8 p.m.
