Master composter training program set

The Ocean County Master Composter program is now accepting applications for fall 2007 training.

The 12-hour training program will be held, subject to demand, at the Ocean County Recycling Center at the county's Northern Recycling Center in Lakewood.

Each year, the program trains a knowledgeable core of citizens who then teach the residents of Ocean County the benefits of home composting.

The three-day program is scheduled for 9 a.m. to noon Sept. 25 and Sept. 27 and 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sept. 29.

After completing the Master Composter training, each volunteer is responsible for completing 24 hours of outreach, education and service to the community, according to a press release.

The program is provided free of charge to Ocean County residents and taxpayers. Nonresidents must pay a fee of $75 and must complete their outreach commitment in Ocean County. The course is limited to 20 persons on a first come, first served basis. Participants should be familiar with gardening and composting and have experience with speaking to small groups.

Each applicant should also be sponsored by a group or organization to ensure the establishment of an outreach network for the program. Many types of groups can sponsor an applicant, such as garden clubs, municipalities, environmental commissions, recycling committees, retirement communities or service clubs.

For details and applications call (732) 506-5047 or visit the Internet Web site www.co.ocean.nj.us/recycle. Completed applications are due by Aug. 16.
