Donation to Howell rec. dept. recognized

The Howell Parks and Recreation Department recognized Sharlene Zup-pardo, founder of Autism Searching for a Better Tomorrow, on July 9 at Echo Lake Park. Zuppardo donated more than $9,000 from a bowling fundraiser that was held in May to the recreation department to go toward its programs for children with special needs. Bryan Haltigan, director of parks and recreation, said, "This was a very nice donation and the money will be used specifically to help run and create new programs for children with special needs."

Local student to attend

leadership conference

Marie Mekosh of Jackson, class of 2010, has been selected to participate in the National Student Leadership Con-ference (NSLC) on International Diplo-macy this summer at American Univer-sity in Washington, D.C.

During the conference, Mekosh will attend specialized workshops and classes designed to develop the skills and traits that define a leader. Professors and college students facilitate the programs and engage the students in career-focused, hands-on activities, simulating a career in the student's area of interest. Trips and tours enhance the student's experience by tailoring them to their specific conference.

The NSLC was established in 1989 and offers leadership conferences to high school and junior high school students from around the world.
