Jackson adds drop box for payment of property taxes

JACKSON - Just as banks have a drop box so that people can make night deposits, the township's tax collector has announced the installation of a drop box for tax payments.

Tax collector Michael W. Campbell said the box is at the front entrance of the municipal building, 95 West Veterans Highway. The drop box has a security system and is connected directly to the tax collector's office.

Township Administrator Phil Del Turco said the installation of the drop box is a convenience for people who will now be able to pay their taxes over the weekend and on holidays.

Campbell said that over the years, people who have not been able to get to the tax collector's office during regular business hour have asked for a drop box to be installed. The box is accessible 24 hours a day, seven days a week. The box is for tax payments only. Cash is not accepted.

People who drop off their tax payment after business hours will have their payment credited to their account on the next business day.

"They can even use the box during business hours if they don't want to stand in line at the counter," Campbell said. "The box will be checked several times a day and hopefully it will be a good convenience for people who just can't get here during normal business hours."

Information regarding the new drop box for taxes can be found on Jackson's Internet Web site, www.jacksontwpnj.net, and click on tax collector to go to the tax collector's page.

A security device is in place in the collection box to ensure that once a payment has been placed inside the drop box it cannot be removed.

Office staff will log in all payments received.

comments section any payment that came through the drop box, as opposed to any payments that came to the window or through the mail," Campbell said.

Property taxes are due Feb. 1, May 1, Aug. 1 and Nov. 1.

"This drop box will be very handy for people who remember that their taxes must be paid by the end of the grace period or the 10th day of those months and they realize it's the ninth day and they can't get down here to pay in time," Campbell said. "They can still drop it off in the box as long as it reaches us when we open the box on the 10th. Then there's no interest."
