Scouts start horse club The Girl Scouts of the Jersey Shore has announced plans to form a horse club. "Our horse programs have become so popular with girls of all ages, the horse club was created to meet that demand and encourage the girls' natural interest and curiosity," said Michelle Masarik, outdoor program specialist. "We're trying to make horses accessible to every girl everywhere." At each monthly meeting, girls will learn about a different equine topic. "Through their love of animals, these girls are going to be exposed to many different things; without realizing it they will be learning about veterinary science, biology, and animal care," said Masarik. Club members will be given the chance to participate in a riding lesson. "Horseback riding can be an expensive hobby and we hope this will enable some girls who might not have the financial means the opportunity to fulfill their dreams of riding a horse," said Masarik. Every year, hundreds of girls experience the joy of riding and caring for horses firsthand through the Girl Scouts' partnership with Manchester-based Chariot Riders and Argos Farms in Lacey Township. The Girl Scouts of the Jersey Shore even have an equestrian center that is open year-round located on-site at its Monmouth Service Center in Howell. "Our horse programs reflect our mission," said Susan H. McClure, chief executive officer. "They give girls the courage to try something new and the confidence to learn new skills. Through the learning process the girls build character and life skills without realizing it because they are having so much fun with the animals." The club is open to all girls between the ages of 5 and 17, and will meet at Girl Scouts of the Jersey Shore's Program Activity Center, 127 Yellow Brook Road, Howell. For more information or to register for the club, contact Michelle Masarik at 732-938- 5454, ext. 181 or e-mail her at mmasarik@girlscoutsjs.org. |
