Seniors celebrate St. Patrick's Day

JACKSON - Seniors who come to the Jackson Senior Citizens Center have learned that it is never too late to celebrate - and that is exactly what they did on March 18, one day after St. Patrick's Day.

Senior center administrator Sheri Silversmith said, "This is the first St. Patrick's Day celebration that the seniors are having corned beef. There are 180 seniors attending this event."

Silversmith said there was a lot of planning for the event, with some assistance from the Jackson schools, which helped to cater the event with corned beef, cabbage, potatoes and carrots for the main course. The guests concluded the meal by enjoying dessert that was provided by Sunrise Senior Living.

The Anderson Brothers sang and performed for the large crowd of seniors. Tori Barbosa, 14, contributed some excellent Irish step dancing to the festivities.

"The seniors came early this morning to help set up everything," Silversmith said. "They also provided the centerpieces for the tables."

Silversmith thanked the Township Council and Mayor Mark Seda for their support of the senior center's programs.

Senior Joe D'Angelo said the center had graciously provided the St. Patrick's Day party for the seniors.

"We're going to have a lot of fun singing and dancing," he said, adding that his favorite Irish tunes include "Danny Boy," "When Irish Eyes Are Smiling" and "Too Ra Loo Ra Loo," even though he is 100 percent Italian.

"All I can say is the center is doing a wonderful job," D'Angelo said. "We're having events every month. The people who are running the center and the township are doing a wonderful job. Everybody is so pleased with what is going on."

Director of Recreation and Senior Services Steven Eisenstein told the seniors he was excited about the program and said they have a very nice facility.

"The great turnout speaks a lot about what has been happening," he said.
