Scherholz, Morton lead New Egypt lacrosse
BY MIKE WHITE Staff Writer
New Egypt High School senior lacrosse players Shane Scherholz and Tommy Morton are having no difficulty finding the back of the cage. The two upperclassmen have sparked the Warriors offense as New Egypt is off to a 2-2 start in the 2008 season.

"They're tearing it up," said New Egypt coach Jay Corby. "Both of them are giving opponents all they can handle. They have very good stick skills and are doing a nice job of finishing around the goal. We're going to need them to continue to lead the offense if we're going to have success."

Scherholz scored the hat trickMonday as New Egypt suffered an 11-8 loss to Princeton Day School.

R.J. Healy was the Warriors' top scorer, netting four goals and adding an assist.Morton chipped in with one goal as New Egypt rallied from an early deficit to close within two late in the game.

"We fell behind early but the kids had no quit in them," Corby said. "We did a nice job of staying composed and rallying. We didn't cave in when they began scoring. We were able to cut it to two goals late, but we couldn't get any closer."

Corby cited the fine play of defenseman Lance Sutton and goaltender Andrew Konop.

"They have been real strong for us," Corby said. "Princeton is a very good team and they scored 11 goals, but in the other games we have been limiting the amount of shots on goal."

Jorge Banuelos has filled in for the injured Cody Shields, who is sidelinedwith an ACL tear. Banuelos brings speed and size to the defense.

After starting the season with a loss to Northern Burlington, New Egypt notched victories over Brick Memorial (12-4) and Ocean Township (13-1).

"We're beating the teamswe're supposed to beat,"Corby said. "We're scoring goals, but we still need to bemore consistent at the offensive end. We're scoring in bunches and then there will be periods where we don't score at all. I would like to see it spread out on a more consistent basis."

Warriors baseball loses to Riverside

Riverside pushed across a run in the bottom of the seventh to defeat New Egypt 4-3 Monday in a Burlington County InterscholasticAthletic League game.

The loss drops theWarriors to 1-2 overall.

"It was a very good game," New Egypt coach Rich Carroll said. "Our pitching was very good, butwe struggled a bit offensively. We need to be a little more consistent on offense."

DakotaHavens started andwent four innings. He gave up two earned runs. Mike Partyka and Mark Delanoy split the final three innings between them.

"Dakota did a god job for us," Carroll said. "Hewas throwing strikes and had good command of his pitches.Again,we didn't hit, and that was a problem."

Taylor Steem had an RBI double in the fourth inning that cut Riverside's lead to 3- 2.

In a 10-6win overHolyCross, sophomore ShaneWeicberger smacked awalk-off grand slam to give New Egypt its first win of the season. With the game tied at 6-6, Weicberger drilled a home run to left center field for the final margin of victory.

"That was a pretty exciting game," Carroll said. "For him to come up with a clutch hit like that was huge. He is going to be a very good player for us. We have a lot of youth on this team.We need to be patient."
