Home run derby will help endow scholarship The home run derby to be held at 10 a.m. June 1 will take place at the YMCAof Western Monmouth County's Camp Topanemus facility on Route 537, Millstone Township. The event is open to anyone of high school age and older. This year's home run derby will benefit the Andrew Lundy Memorial Scholarship Fund. Andrew, 16, a junior at Freehold High School, was one of four people killed in a motor vehicle accident on Kozloski Road, Freehold Township, on Jan. 10, 2007. In a statement announcing the home run derby, the Lundy family saidAndrew's family and friends would like to dedicate the day to remembering the teenager's devotion to his school and his community. Proceeds from the event will help to endow a scholarship in his name in science and citizenship that will be presented to a Freehold High School junior who best exemplifies Andrew's qualities. It is hoped that enough money will be raised through the home run derby to endow the scholarship for many years to come. The home run derby is being organized with assistance from Jodi Pelano, vice president, programs, YMCA of Western Monmouth County, and Megan McVay, the director of Camp Topanemus. The entry fee for the home run derby is $20 per person. All participants will receive a T-shirt and a chance to win prizes that include a YMCA membership, Mets tickets, Yankees tickets, an iPod, gift certificates and more. Food and drinks will be available. Anyone interested in participating should complete a preregistration form and return it by May 12. Registration forms may be picked up at the front desk of the YMCA of Western Monmouth County, 470 East Freehold Road, Freehold Township, or visit the Internet Web site http://ywmcswimteam.org/homerunderby. pdf. The rain date for the home run derby will be June 7. |
