Gov. Corzine should not close Brendan Byrne State Forest
The 36,000-acre Brendan Byrne State Forest in Ocean and Burlington counties is an outdoor enthusiast's haven. This state park is also on the list of nine New Jersey parks to be closed by the governor on July 1 to save the state money. The park is the focal point for many outdoor activities and attracts people from all over New Jersey and the United States.

One example of the park's value was this past weekend. The park hosted the Regional Qualifier for the International Six Day Enduro to be held in Greece this fall. Over 1,500 competitors, support crews, course workers and spectators from all corners of the United States (were there). Local businesses and the park benefit from events held (there).

Chris Bethmann, park superintendent, and his staff of only six people manage this 36,000-acre park.

I spent the weekend observing these park personnel and I can attest that New Jersey residents get their tax dollars worth from these dedicated state personnel.

I realize the state is in a financial crisis and cuts are needed. However, I urge Gov. Corzine to look elsewhere for budget cuts.

Closing Brendan Byrne State Forest and the eight other state parks would save the state a very small amount in relation to the benefits they produce for the people of New Jersey.
