Lakewood H.S. to induct hall of fame members LAKEWOOD - One woman and five men will be inducted into the Lakewood High School Alumni Hall of Fame on May 18 at theWoodlake Country Club in Lakewood. The luncheon is open to the public, and tickets are available through the alumni association. This year marks the 14th annual induction ceremony. The following people will be inducted this year: Martha Gold taught English and German at Lakewood High School from 1960 through 1977, retiring in 1977. She remained active as a mentor and volunteer in many areas. She was recognized by Georgian Court University as a master teacher/mentor of student teachers. Some of her volunteer work has been with the Ocean County Food Bank, reading at Lakewood's Clifton Avenue Grade School, handicapped individuals. She continues to be active in the life-care complex where she resides inMaryland and enjoys her hobbies of reading and music. William Goldstein graduated from Lakewood High School in 1959. He pursued a career in the musical field and has received many awards and honors that include Emmy and Grammy nominations. His work experience has included the original music for the "Fame" television series; being signed by Berry Gordy, founder of Motown Records; and working with many well-known artists. Frank Hughes, a 1966 graduate, is presently the musical director at Toms River High School North. He has lent his musical expertise to many local groups and has performed with many well-known artists over the years. Hughes is the official bugler for Monmouth Park race track in Oceanport. He enjoys working with young people in the furthering of their musical careers. Ira Jacobson graduated from Lakewood High School in 1945. He owned and operated Brielle Galleries from 1950 through 2004. The gallery was known worldwide for its porcelains, crystal and art.Aside from the business of Brielle Galleries, Jacobson spent his life hosting more than 40 gala events that raised thousands of dollars for county, state and national charities. Stephen V. Lane graduated from Lakewood High School in 1944. After receiving his degree in 1947 from Rutgers College of Pharmacy, he returned home to Lakewood and interned at Lakewood Pharmacy. In 1955 Lane purchased the pharmacy. He then partnered with Bob Alpert in 1960 to form Lane Drugs, which expanded to a chain of 35 stores with more than 450 employees. Lane has been honored many times for his community involvement and professional success over the years.Lane chaired the Lakewood Planning Board and the Lakewood Housing Authority many years ago. Mark Woodfield, a 1969 graduate, has spent his entire career in law enforcement. He began as a patrolman in Dania, Fla., in 1973 and is presently chief of investigations at the Ocean County Prosecutor's Office in Toms River. In addition to performing his duties, he continued to further his education and also gives his services to many organizations on a volunteer level. The Hall of Fame luncheon is the major fundraiser of the Alumni Association each year. All money raised is given back to students of Lakewood High School each year in the form of scholarships and contributions to school programs that benefit the students. The annual luncheon will be held May 18 at noon and is open to the public. Tickets are $40 each and may be obtained by calling (732) 657-2761. Submissions for future Hall of Fame inductions are always being sought. |
