Roller Girls gearing up for Asbury Park action

The Jersey Shore's toughest roller girls will welcome the ladies of Long Island to Asbury Park on April 25.

The Jersey Shore Roller Girls' all-star travel team — the league's best players — will begin their 2009 season by squaring off against the Long Island Roller Rebels. The bout will be played at Convention Hall in Asbury Park, where all of the Jersey Shore Roller Girls' home bouts are held.

Coming off a 2008 season of impressive wins, the travel team is energized for a new year of challenges, said team captain Michelle "Chelle Be Evil" Scamporino of Jackson.

"Although we lost a lot of 'heavy hitters' from last season, we have a plethora of talent on our team this year. Our strengths will be in our multitalented players, our speed and our endurance," she said.

The Jersey Shore Roller Girls announced that the Rock 'N' Roll Chorus will return to entertain the crowd at halftime. The teenage a capella group is based in Howell and performs around the country.

Doors for the April 25 match will open at 7 p.m. The first whistle blows at 8 p.m. Tickets are $15 in advance and can be purchased at www.jerseyshorerollergirls.net. Tickets are $20 the day of the bout, $5 for children under age 12. Discounts are available for guests with military ID.

The Jersey Shore Roller Girls have a full schedule of events through November. For more information, visit www.jerseyshorerollergirls. net.

The Jersey Shore Roller Girls league consists of three intra-league teams — the Murder Beach Militia, the Right Coast Rollers and the Anchor Assassins — and one all-star travel team. Its members — women of all ages and backgrounds — fill the Jackson Skating Center for practices several times weekly, training and scrimmaging with their coaching and referee staff.

Roller derby has been revamped into a flat-track version of the old-school style of a banked track. Jersey Shore Roller Girls, a league that was formed almost two years ago, skates under the Women's Flat Track Derby Association rules and regulations.

Killa" Ganguzza of Freehold; Tara "CheeTara" Nemeth of Jackson; Maureen "Shermaine Tank" of Edison; Theresa "Morguetisha" Adams of Neptune; Shannon "Nonster" Fuoco of Toms River.
