Pupils will learn about Holocaust JACKSON — St. Aloysius School has announced a partnership with Target in recognition of the company's efforts to fund programs that bring the arts to schools. "Through a local Target grant awarded to St. Aloysius School, students will have the opportunity to participate in an Artist in Residence program sponsored by Target," said the school's public relations coordinator, Olive Taylor. "Young Audiences of New Jersey and Rebecca Kelly will present the program 'I Never Saw Another Butterfly.' " Taylor said students will reflect on symbols of the World War II-era Holocaust and then create their own poetry and art in response to what they have learned. The poem "I Never Saw Another Butterfly" by Pavel Friedman and the art of Anselm Kiefer will be presented as catalysts for thought and artistic expression. Art teacher Antoinette McEwan said this program teaches tolerance and the impact art has on society. She said it will inspire the students in and beyond the classroom. McEwan said the program will also give students the opportunity to work side by side with a professional artist. The grant is part of ongoing efforts by Target to strengthen families and communities throughout the country. Since opening its doors, Target has given percent of its income to organizations that support education, the arts, social services and volunteerism, according to a press release. Today that equals more than $3 million every week. Laysha Ward, Target community relations president, said the local grants are making a difference in the communities Target serves. "We are proud to partner with St. Aloysius School as part of our ongoing commitment to give back to the communities where our guests and team members live and work," said Ward. |
